When writing a research paper, do you need to cite outside knowledge?
Friday, July 24th, 2009 | Research
I know that in a research paper, citations must be made for sources. Also, in a DBQ (Document Based Essay), outside information must be cited. So in a research paper, must you cite information that you already knew?
If you already know it and most people do too, then it does not have to be cited. If it is knowledge that is only found in a few places or not common knowledge, then cite it for sure.

If what you already knew is common knowledge, no. But if it turns up in your research, it should be cited. That way the reader knows that you actually did the research… that’s why it’s called a "research paper".
